The Most Fun & Creative Way to Quit Smoking: Hula Hooping!

creative way to quit smoking

You’ve tried every creative way to quit smoking you can think of: quitting cold turkey, bargaining with yourself, even asking your husband or wife to basically babysit you so you don’t try to smoke. You’ve read every book on how to help someone quit smoking.

And there was even that one time you secretly visited a hypnotist.

But I’m pretty sure you have never tried hula hooping to quit smoking.  It seems crazy, but hey, quitting smoking is crazy hard.  And hula hooping is surprisingly good for you anyway.

Hula hooping, by the way, is not just circling a hoop around your waist.  That is part of it, but over the past 10-15 years it has evolved into a full and modern dance style.

There are literally thousands of moves you can learn to do with your hula hoop.

Take my Six Week Beginner Hula Hoop Challenge for All Bodies, my new online course you can take from home 24/7 at your own pace! I teach you tons of hula hoop tricks and moves!

Learning a new skill is always a great angle for tackling something like quitting smoking.  In fact, it’s probably the easiest way to quit smoking naturally.

Keeping your brain focused on something helps cut down on those unbearable moments when all you can think about is lighting a cigarette.

But there’s more to hula hooping than just learning a new skill.

Spending time hula hooping is so enjoyable that it begins to take over your life before you even realize it.  It becomes part of your daily routine, and part of who you are.

This is the reason why picking up hula hooping has helped countless hoopers kick the habit once and for all.

It boils down to this:

Hula hooping is a habit, just like smoking.

Often when we see people talking about hula hooping, they refer to it as a hobby.  Something fun to do to pass the time.  While it’s true that hula hooping is one of our hobbies, it goes much deeper than that.

Here are some things we as hoopers do that are just like things that smokers do:

  • We take our hoops everywhere we go
  • We panic if we have to go into a place that doesn’t allow hula hoops
  • We play with our hoops when we are feeling uncomfortable, anxious, excited, happy, sad, angry, satisfied…it’s our go-to for dealing with emotion.
  • We use hooping as a way to keep our hands busy.
  • We often hoop in social situations such as at parties because we feel more comfortable when we are hooping.

Essentially when you start hula hooping to stop smoking, you are trading in your bad habit for a good habit.

All of those moments that usually feel so empty when you’re trying to quit smoking, can now be filled with hula hooping.

And that is why it works.

Another important aspect of using hula hooping as a creative way to quit smoking is that exercise becomes integral to the process.

Even though hula hooping is way too fun to feel like work, it absolutely does get your heart rate up, burn calories, and tone your body.  All exercise, including hula hooping, releases endorphins to make your brain happy.

Just like if you were to take a few puffs off a Camel.

And because hula hooping is a great workout, you can be less concerned about the potential for weight gain that we fear when quitting smoking.  Also, it won’t bore you to tears like walking on a treadmill does, so you’ll work out longer and harder without even intending to.

This will help you regain stamina after quitting smoking, and strengthening those lungs back up gently and steadily.

I don’t smoke, but I’m thinking hooping would be great for my hips which I’m always trying to loosen up. That pic looks like you’re in an altered state of happiness 🙂
